When to Neuter a Large Breed Dog: Joint Health Facts

Β

Quick Answer

A 2020 UC Davis study of mixed-breed dogs found that dogs expected to weigh more than about 43 pounds as adults had a higher rate of joint disorders when neutered before one year of age. The authors suggest considering neutering after a year for dogs that will grow large. That is one study with limits, so timing is a decision to make with your vet. Pawganix MoveGuard Growth supports joint development during the growth window, alongside vet care.

What the UC Davis study found

Timing seems to matter most for dogs that will be big.

Researchers at UC Davis looked at hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament tears in mixed-breed dogs, and published the results in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2020. Dogs that matured at over about 43 pounds and were spayed or neutered before one year of age had a higher rate of these joint disorders. Smaller dogs did not show the same pattern.

One example from the university's summary: among female dogs over 43 pounds, the rate of joint disorders rose from about 4 percent in intact dogs to 10 to 12 percent in those spayed before age one. The same study found no increased cancer risk in any weight category.

What the study does not tell you

  • It covered mixed-breed dogs only. Breed-specific results can differ, so ask your vet about your dog's breed.
  • Adult size is hard to predict in a mixed-breed puppy. The authors say this complicates adoption decisions when parentage is unknown.
  • It looked at joint disorders and cancer. Timing can also matter for behavior, other health risks and local rules, which is why it is a decision to make with your vet rather than from one study.

The authors suggest that shelters, breeders and humane societies consider a standard of neutering after one year of age for dogs that will grow into large sizes. They note this matters especially for working dogs, because joint disorders can shorten a working life.

What to ask your vet

1

What will my dog weigh as an adult?

Parents, breed and growth charts give a range. Our guide to puppy growth charts explains what the data can and cannot tell you.

2

What is the best timing for my dog?

Ask how breed, expected size, sex, lifestyle and household factors change the answer, and whether waiting past one year suits your situation.

3

What should I do about weight and exercise meanwhile?

A lean puppy on measured meals puts less load on growing joints. See our guide to exercise for large breed puppies.

4

What should I watch for in the joints?

Limping, bunny-hopping, stiffness after rest or reluctance to play are worth reporting early. Our guide to growth plates in puppies explains why this stage is delicate.

Supporting joints through the growth window

Whatever timing you and your vet choose, the growth window is when large-breed joints and bones are still developing, and it only happens once. Our large breed puppy growth guide covers feeding, pace of growth and exercise.

MoveGuard Growth is a daily joint chew made for the growth stage, dosed by the dog's expected adult weight, so check the label. It supports joint development, works alongside your vet's plan, and does not replace decisions about timing or veterinary care. Check the label for allergens if your dog has sensitivities, since it contains shellfish, krill, fish and soy. Once a dog is an adult with closed growth plates, our MoveGuard comparison shows which formula fits.

When to call the vet

See your vet promptly if
  • Your puppy suddenly limps and will not put weight on a leg
  • A limp lasts more than a day or two, or keeps coming back
  • A joint looks swollen or feels hot
  • Your puppy cries out when touched or moved

Surgery decisions, recovery plans and any questions about timing belong with your veterinarian, who knows your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does neutering early cause joint problems in large dogs?

A 2020 UC Davis study of mixed-breed dogs found a higher rate of hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and cruciate ligament tears in dogs over about 43 pounds as adults that were neutered before one year. It is one study, so talk to your vet about your own dog.

What age did the UC Davis researchers suggest?

They suggested shelters, breeders and humane societies consider neutering after one year of age for dogs that will grow into large sizes.

Did the study find a cancer risk?

No. The study found no increased cancer risk in any weight category.

Does this apply to purebred dogs?

The study covered mixed-breed dogs only, so results for specific breeds may differ. Your vet can advise on your dog's breed.

Can a joint supplement help a growing large breed puppy?

Some owners give a daily joint supplement during the growth window. MoveGuard Growth is dosed by expected adult weight and works alongside vet care, not instead of it.

Their growth window only happens once.
