Yeast naturally lives in small numbers inside a healthy dog's ear, but it flourishes in dark, warm, humid spaces. Floppy-eared breeds — Cockers, Bassets, Spaniels, Labs — trap moisture and limit airflow, and even leftover bathwater or a humid stretch of weather can tip the balance toward overgrowth. When moisture lingers, the ear stops being a balanced micro-environment. Change the environment inside and out, and you change the balance.

The most common thread behind yeasty, itchy ears is underlying allergy. When a dog is allergic, the skin barrier becomes disrupted — partly from the itch-and-scratch cycle itself — and Malassezia yeast, normally a quiet commensal, becomes far more abundant on allergic skin. Allergies don't just make a dog itchy; they open the door and yeast walks in.

Many owners notice flare-ups track with diet. Being honest, the science is mixed — skin Malassezia actually prefers fats over sugars — so a low-carb bowl is one supportive lever, not a cure. Still, many vets suggest lower-sugar, lower-refined-carb feeding as part of a whole-body approach to keeping skin and ears in balance.

One of the biggest ideas in modern veterinary dermatology is the gut-skin axis — a two-way conversation between the gut microbiome and the skin. Dogs with itchy, allergy-linked skin tend to show lower gut diversity, and recurring yeast is frequently a downstream sign of gut imbalance rather than just an ear problem. Supporting the gut is often the missing piece.

It feels counterintuitive, but scrubbing ears too often can backfire. The ear canal keeps its own micro-environment — protective oils, friendly microbes, and pH — and every aggressive flush disrupts that balance, sometimes creating the very irritation it was meant to solve. Most healthy dogs need cleaning only every few weeks.
