Rottweiler Growth Window Guide: 30 Months Before the Muscle Goes On

Rottweilers look capable long before they are, which is why so much conditioning work starts in the exact months it does the most damage.

Rottweiler Growth Window Guide cover Inside the Rottweiler Growth Window Guide

30 mo

Growth window, with plates closing around 18–24 months

80–135 lbs

Adult weight on some of the heaviest bone of any breed

#1

Priority: no conditioning work on open growth plates

Why the Growth Window Matters More for Rottweilers

Muscle can be built at two years old. Cartilage cannot be rebuilt at all.

The Large Breed Growth Challenge

Rottweilers combine some of the heaviest bone of any breed with one of the highest rates of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, and they look ready long before they are.

  • 📏 Growth plates open until roughly 18–24 months, with development continuing past that
  • ⚖️ Adult weight of 80–135 lbs arriving faster than coordination does
  • 🏋️ Weight pull, spring poles, hill sprints and roadwork all load open plates
  • 🦴 Shoulder and hock OCD both present here, and the hock lesion is a Rottweiler pattern

The 5 Early Warning Signs

Monitor closely from months 4–18. Looking capable is not the same as being ready.

🦮

Uneven Gait

Limping or favouring one leg, especially after exercise.

🐇

Bunny-Hopping

Both rear legs moving together. A hip or growth plate sign.

🦵

Joint Swelling

Warm or puffy joints. Same-day vet visit, HOD escalates quickly.

😴

Sudden Reluctance

Refusing a walk or play. Puppies mask pain, so this is significant.

🦴

Shoulder or Hock Lameness

OCD shows up in both here, and the hock lesion is notably this breed.

⚠️ If you notice 2 or more of these signs, your Rottweiler may be experiencing growth-related joint stress.

The Rottweiler Growth Timeline

Months 2–4

Dense, heavy bone from the start. Weight arrives faster than coordination.

Months 4–8

Peak growth. Shoulder and hock OCD both present here, and the hock lesion is a Rottweiler pattern.

Months 8–12

Powerful enough to injure itself badly. This is where owners start conditioning, far too early.

Months 12–18

Filling out rather than growing up. Cartilage is solidifying into its permanent form.

Months 18–24

Growth plates closing. The frame is nearly final and muscle is filling in behind it.

Months 24–30 (final)

Plates closed or closing. Continue support through the full window.
