Four things worth catching early

Most of what we hear about started small and got put down to β€œjust how they are”. Here are the signs that give each one away, and a free 60-second check for each.

Itch that keeps coming back

  • Licking or chewing the paws
  • Rust-brown fur between the toes
  • Head shaking, scratching at the ears
  • A musty smell that comes back after a bath
The giveaway is the pattern: a shampoo or a food change helps for a week or two, then it’s back.

A big-breed puppy who is still growing

  • A breed that ends up over 50 lb
  • Under two years old
  • Growing fast, all legs and paws
Joints are still being built through the growth years, and that window closes on a date you can work out.

A grown dog starting to slow down

  • Slow to get up after a rest
  • Pausing before the stairs or the car
  • Walks getting shorter
  • Stiff on cold mornings
These creep in so slowly they’re easy to miss. Most owners only notice when they compare with last year.

A cat who isn’t settled

  • Spraying, or peeing outside the box
  • Hiding more than usual
  • Fighting or staring matches between cats
  • Over-grooming, bald patches
It often starts with a change in the house: a move, a new pet, a new baby, building work.
