FELINE BEHAVIOR

She Was At The Vet For Two Hours. She came home smelling like a stranger, and the cat who groomed her every night would not let her down the hall.

Non recognition aggression is one of the most upsetting things that can happen in a two cat house, and almost nobody is warned about it before it happens. What breaks is scent, which is also the part you are allowed to do something about.

Pip was at the clinic for two hours on a Thursday afternoon. A dental check, nothing serious, home by four.

Joanne carried the carrier in, set it down in the hall and opened the door the way she always did. Otis came round the corner to meet his sister, the way he always did. Then he stopped six feet short of her. He flattened himself and made a noise she had never heard in seven years.

These two slept curled into one another. Otis washed the top of Pip's head every single night, and had done so since they were kittens in the same box.

By Friday morning he had her pinned in the bathroom. By Saturday Joanne was sleeping on the sofa so she could hear what was happening downstairs.

It has a name, and almost nobody is warned

If that has happened in your house, the first thing worth saying is that you did not cause it and your cats have not stopped loving each other.

The second thing is that it has a name, which almost nobody tells you before it happens. It is called non recognition aggression, and a vet trip is the most common trigger there is.

Nobody warns you because the appointment itself is routine. You are braced for the carrier, the car and maybe a sulk. Instead the thing that breaks is the relationship between two animals who were fine when you left.

It is also strangely lonely, because from the outside it sounds like a small problem.

A Cat Parent going through the same thing wrote the part that nobody says out loud, and the hurt in it is about the cat rather than the inconvenience.

I had to take a cat to the vet to get a piece of string out of her butt - when she came back her smell was so off her friend didn't recognize her and hissed at her for a week and she was so hurt cause she was bonded to him - it was so stressful I think next time I'll take all cats to the vet at the same time

A Cat Parent, writing on Reddit

I'm just heartbroken. Cat 2 has been to the vet multiple times for nearly the whole month of June, and they never had this problem. But now it's cat 1 who was at the vet for like 2 hours, and now they just seem to hate each other:(

Your house is a scent map, and the clinic edited it

Here is what is actually going on, and it is the reason the usual fixes only half work.

Cats who live together do not recognize each other by sight the way we do. They keep a shared household scent going constantly. They do it by rubbing against each other and the furniture and you, and by grooming each other at night. Think of it as a signature the household keeps rewriting on everybody in it.

A clinic rewrites one cat's signature in two hours. Antiseptic, other animals, handling, sometimes anesthetic. She comes back looking identical and reading as a stranger. The cat who meets her at the door is not being cruel. He is reacting to an intruder who has somehow got into the house.

One Cat Parent worked it out and put it better than most leaflets do.

Medications, anesthesia, the general smell of the vet, these all affect how they smell to each other. I had a cat I brought home and had just gotten him acclimated to the house. I took him to the vet to be neutered and when I brought him home I had to start the process all over again because my resident cats were incredibly aggressive towards him as if he was brand new.

A Cat Parent, writing on Reddit

The sensitivity involved is genuinely hard to believe until it happens to you.

Another Cat Parent described a cat reacting to a scent she had carried in on her clothes: "Even when I just had some of the other cats hair on my sweater, she would hiss at me and then walk through the room tensely, growling the whole time."

That is the scale of signal involved. It is not a grudge, not a personality clash, and not anything you can reason either of them out of.

Why the wipe and the sweatshirt only half work

Which explains why the advice circulating online works about half the time.

The standard version is to wipe both cats with a damp cloth, rub a worn sweatshirt on one and then the other, and keep them apart for a few days. One Cat Parent put it like this: "wipe each kitty with a cat wipe and then rub something that smells like you (like a sweatshirt) on one, then rub it on the other and vice versa."

None of that is wrong, and it is aimed squarely at the right thing. The trouble is that a wipe is a single event. The two of them will go on testing each other for days, long after the cloth has dried.

What the households that get through it have in common

What the people who get through this smoothly tend to have in common is that something was already holding in the background.

One Cat Parent described a version that works, and she is clear that it was both halves together: "I went through this every time I take my female cat to the vet, as soon as I brought her home, my male cat sniffs her, hisses and goes on the attack. I had to place him in the spare bedroom with their cat tree and Feliway diffuser. Then spray the entire house with Feliway spray and after 3 days of separation, they were back sleeping, eating and playing together."

Separation gives the signature time to come back. A steady calming pheromone is the room they are testing each other inside while that happens.

The timing mistake almost everybody makes

And there is one detail in that which is easy to miss, and it is the whole reason people say a diffuser did nothing for them.

A diffuser takes 24 to 48 hours to bring a room to a steady level. Plug it in on the drive home from the clinic and it is holding nothing on the evening that matters. That is exactly the evening the two of them meet in the hall.

So the move is to plug it in two days before the appointment rather than two hours after it. Same product, same room, completely different outcome. Nobody sells it to you that way because the useful version is unglamorous.

Two days to a steady level. Plug it in on the drive home and it is not holding anything on the evening it is needed.

The four things she did the next time

The next time Pip had an appointment, Joanne did four things and wrote them on the back of the reminder card.

She plugged the diffuser in on the Tuesday for a Thursday appointment, in the living room where they actually spend the evening. She set the spare room up before she left, with a litter box, water and Otis's own blanket. Separating them was then not itself a drama.

When she came home she put Pip in the spare room rather than Otis, because Pip was the one carrying the clinic on her. She fed them on either side of that closed door for three days. That turns the other cat's smell into something arriving at the same time as dinner.

On the fourth day she opened the door for ten minutes while she stood in the room, and nothing happened at all.

What this is, and what it is not

Here is what CalmGuard is, and here is what it is not.

It is a plug in diffuser releasing a synthetic feline calming pheromone at a disclosed 2 percent. It is drug free and non sedating. It covers up to 700 sq ft and takes 24 to 48 hours to bring that room to a steady level. That is why it belongs in the room before the appointment rather than after it. The kit holds three 30 day refills, so a two cat household is covered for 90 days without a gap.

What it is not is a substitute for the separation and the slow reintroduction. It is not a guarantee about any particular pair of cats either. One Cat Parent, further down this road than most, wrote "We've tried everythingβ€”Feliway diffusers, multiple vet visits (both cats are otherwise healthy), behavior consultations, anti-anxiety meds, gradual reintroductions, and strict separation." That is a fair thing to be carrying into this page, and it is why the 60 Day Calm Home Guarantee is there.

What Cat Parents who have been through a vet day say

Two hours at the dentist and my two did not speak for nine days. I had no idea this was even a thing that happened until it happened to me.

The detail that mattered was plugging it in before the appointment rather than when we got back. I had been doing it the wrong way round for years.

S.K., 47, SurveyorVERIFIED BUYER

I separated the wrong cat the first time. Putting the one who came back from the clinic in the spare room instead made the whole thing shorter.

B.O., 33, ParamedicVERIFIED BUYER

They are back to sleeping in the same chair. I am not going to claim a product did that on its own, because the three days apart did most of it, but I am not doing the next appointment without it.

Pawganix CalmGuard

Running in the room they share before the appointment, not plugged in after it

A cat who sprays, hides or squares up with a housemate is not being difficult, it is telling you the room does not feel safe. Cats claim a space with their own facial pheromones, and CalmGuard keeps a copy of that signal in the air all day.

CalmGuard supports calm behavior in the room it is running in. It is drug free and non sedating, it does not replace separation and a slow reintroduction, and results vary by cat. Allow 24 to 48 hours for the room to reach a steady level.
