Halloween Pet Safety: Candy, Costumes and Calm Cats
<!--
PRE-PUBLISH CHECKLIST (NEW POST, DRAFT, NOT LIVE)
Slug: halloween-pet-safety-calm-cats-dogs
TAG (blog hub): Cats
URGENT: Halloween is Saturday October 31, 2026. Publish within days. Search demand is short-lived: "halloween pet safety" peaked 1,600 in Oct 2024 and 1,000 in Oct 2025 (KD 3), "halloween pet safety tips" 110 (KD 9), "halloween hazards for pets" 10, "chocolate toxic to dogs" 1,900/mo year-round (KD 44, CPC 2.10) with a Halloween bump. Keep the URL for next year and refresh the date each October.
Why Cats tag: the product that fits is CalmGuard (cats). Dogs get the candy, costume and ID sections. Per the quiz rules, a mixed post uses the quiz that matches the main product CTA, so the Calm Home Audit is used. A dog calming product does not exist, so the dog section sends readers to their vet, as the ASPCA does.
Product: CalmGuard, https://pawganix.com/products/calmguard-cat-calming-diffuser. Facts from the PDP: synthetic feline calming pheromone at 2 percent in a fragrance free carrier, drug free, non-sedating, steady level in 24 to 48 hours, changes usually in the first 7 to 14 days. CalmGuard compliance: Cat Parents, structure-function only, no prevents, stops, cures or treats, no price, no vet-reviewed byline. Halloween is 10 days away, so the copy says to start early and does NOT promise results by Halloween.
Quiz: Calm Home Audit, https://pawganix.com/pages/calm-home-audit (after the FAQ, per the cat order).
Video block: omitted (no verified CalmGuard video).
Sources opened and read Oct 21 2026: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Halloween safety news release dated Oct 22 2025 (read via the City of River Woods page that republishes it, so the citation names both); PetMD, Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin; Hill's Pet, Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin; Crump, Veterinary Evidence 2023; dvm360 (McCafferty with Colleran DVM); CalmGuard PDP. A dedicated chocolate toxicity page could not be opened, so no theobromine detail or doses are given; the page relays the ASPCA instruction to contact a vet right away.
Not covered because unsourced: candle and decoration hazards, glow stick detail, cat-specific indoor-only advice beyond the ASPCA note. Add only with a source.
Not included: hero image, email-capture block.
Audio: Kokoro, upload to Shopify Files as halloween-pet-safety-calm-cats-dogs.mp3, then set the duration in the JSON-LD.
Checks: no em dashes, no exclamation marks, no cat-quiz or landing links, no GutGuard or BiomeGuard.
Needs Dr. Gaby Thompson review before the byline goes live.

<h2 id="candy">How do you keep pets away from Halloween candy?</h2>
<p class="answer-lead">Hide candy where your pet cannot reach it, and call a vet right away if any is eaten.</p>
<p>The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center says dogs can smell candy, so storing it well matters. Chocolate and sugar-free candy sweetened with xylitol are the main worries, and the ASPCA's advice is to contact a veterinary professional right away if your pet eats Halloween candy. Do not wait for signs to show up. Keep treat bowls off low tables, and ask children to keep wrappers out of reach as well.</p>
<h2 id="costumes">Are costumes safe for pets?</h2>
<p>Costumes are fine for pets who enjoy them, if they are safe. The ASPCA says a costume should fit well so it cannot slip, tangle the pet or become a choking hazard if chewed, and that a costumed pet should never be left unattended. If your pet seems unhappy, take it off.</p>
<h2 id="door">What about trick-or-treaters and the doorbell?</h2>
<p>The ASPCA says keeping pets away from trick-or-treaters may help, and that even indoor pets can become anxious around costumed visitors. It also advises talking with your vet early about calming options if your pet needs them. Practical steps many owners find useful include setting up a quiet room before the first knock, and keeping your dog or cat away from the door while it is opening.</p>

A 2023 review in Veterinary Evidence of five studies on a feline facial pheromone analogue found four reported improvement in some stress signs, with no adverse effects reported. Those studies used a different branded product in vet clinics, so they show what such analogues can do in general. Our guide on whether <a href="https://pawganix.com/blogs/news/do-cat-pheromone-diffusers-actually-work?ref=blog-halloween-diffusers">cat pheromone diffusers work</a> has the details.</p>
<h2 id="pumpkins">Are pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns safe for pets?</h2>
<p>PetMD considers fresh carving pumpkin safe for dogs, though it is stringy and watery. Hill's warns that rotting pumpkin can make pets sick, so clear out old jack-o'-lanterns and do not let pets nibble on them. Our <a href="https://pawganix.com/blogs/news/pumpkin-for-dogs-what-is-safe-and-what-to-avoid?ref=blog-halloween-pumpkin">pumpkin for dogs guide</a> covers what to feed and what to avoid.</p>
<h2 id="night">Is it safe to take your dog out on Halloween night?</h2>
<p>If you take your pet out after dark, the ASPCA advises a reflective collar, a secure leash and a collar with proper identification. A startled pet can bolt, so an up-to-date tag helps a lost pet get home.</p>
